CUWebLogin Error Messages
Whenever you encounter a problem logging in with CUWebLogin, the first thing to do is try again. The problem may simply disappear on the second try.
Problems you may be able to fix yourself
| What's wrong? | If you see this message... | Then try this |
|---|---|---|
| Mistyped NetID or Password | ERROR: The NetID or Password you entered was incorrect. Please make sure you entered your Cornell NetID (use lowercase letters) and your password (make sure CAPS LOCK isn't on) properly. Passwords may contain both upper- and lower-case. If you have forgotten your password or if this problem persists, you may contact the Contact Center (helpdesk@cornell.edu, 607-255-8990) for further assistance. | Click the Retry Login button, then type your NetID and password in the boxes again, checking carefully for errors and making sure the "CAPS LOCK" key on your keyboard has not been pressed. If you keep seeing this message after you're certain you've typed everything correctly, there may be a problem with your password; the Contact Center can help you reset it. |
| "@" in NetID box | ERROR: You have entered an e-mail address instead of a NetID. Your NetID is the combination of letters and numbers that appear before the "@cornell.edu" in your e-mail address. Please try again. If this problem persists, please contact the Contact Center (helpdesk@cornell.edu, 607-255-8990) for further assistance. | Click the Retry Login button, then type only your Cornell NetID in the NetID box. For example, if your Cornell e-mail address is "ewe2@cornell.edu", type "ewe2" in the NetID box. Other access codes will not work. |
| Back button | ERROR: The CUWebLogin server encountered a problem (no pending session ID). Please try to access the web site again. If you continue to see this problem it is likely that the web site you are attempting to access is not configured properly. Please report persistent problems to the webmaster of the site you are trying to access, or ask the Contact Center (helpdesk@cornell.edu, 607-255-8990) to assist you. | If you see this message after clicking your browser's "Back" button and returning to the CUWebLogin page, simply ignore the message; your login status is not affected (even though the CUWebLogin credentials window disappears). If you see this message without clicking the "Back" button, you should try to log in again. If you can't get in after several tries, notify the webmaster of the site you are trying to access, or ask the Contact Center (HelpDesk) for help. |
| Login cancelled | ERROR: You clicked "cancel" when CUWebLogin prompted you for your NetID and Password, and the web site you were attempting to access did not provide a location to send you to when this occurs. If you would like to attempt to access the restricted resource again, please click the "Retry" text below. You may contact the Contact Center (helpdesk@cornell.edu, 607-255-8990) for further assistance. | You will not be able to access the restricted web site you requested until you enter your NetID and password. If you clicked the Cancel button by mistake, the Retry Login button will take you back to the login screen. |
| Missing cookie | ERROR: CUWebLogin did not receive a necessary cookie from your web browser. Either your browser is not set to accept cookies, or the web site you are attempting to access is not configured properly. Please check your browser preferences; the Contact Center (helpdesk@cornell.edu, 607-255-8990) can provide assistance. | Web sites use snippets of data called "cookies" to store and exchange information. The privacy settings in your web browser may be blocking cookies that CUWebLogin needs. For example, in Internet Explorer on Windows you can adjust your privacy settings by opening the Tools menu, choosing Internet Options, and clicking the Privacy tab. It may be simplest to allow all cookies within the .cornell.edu domain. At a minimum, your browser needs to allow cookies to be issued for the .cornell.edu domain from cuweblogin.cit.cornell.edu and from the web site you are trying to access; also, the web site you are trying to access must be allowed to set cookies for itself. |
| IP address changed | ERROR: Your Internet (IP) address is now different than it was when you attempted to access the page which required authentication. Your Internet Service Provider may be using a form of "IP Address Pooling" which is causing this problem. Please contact the Contact Center (helpdesk@cornell.edu, 607-255-8990) for further assistance. | You may need to go to another location, such as a public computer lab, to access web sites protected by CUWebLogin. To make absolutely certain that the problem is your Internet Service Provider, do the following: Clear your CUWebLogin credentials by exiting your web browser (on Windows, close all browser windows; on Mac OS, choose Quit). Then go to the CUWebLogin test page and try to log in again. If you see "CUWebLogin Test Succeeded," wait a few minutes and try to reload the test page. An error message on the test page means that your ISP is not compatible with CUWebLogin. |
