Steps to Register or Record a Domain Name at Cornell


Step 1: Network Administrator submits request [Request Form]
  1. Form requires ALL fields filled in
    - To register, click "Request CIT DNS Service" button -or-
    - To record, click "Record Purchase Only" button
  2. E-mail notification #1 is sent to unit head
  3. All requests proceed to Step 2


Step 2: Unit head affirms or denies request [Approval Form]
  1. In the "Your comments" field, enter reasons for approval or denial of request
  2. To approve: Click the "I affirm the domain" button
    • E-mail notification #2a is sent to netadmin
    • Request for registration proceeds to Step 3 -or-
      Request for recording is complete
    - or -
    To deny: Click the "I deny the domain" button

Step 3: Domain Name Manager creates domain or refers request for review [Status Form]

If request clearly meets the criteria set forth in the policy (recognized name of a unit, registered student organization, etc.), then

  1. Domain Name Manager creates the domain
  2. E-mail notification #3a is sent to network administrator and unit head
  3. Registration is complete

Otherwise

  1. Domain Name Manager refers request to the IT Policy Office
  2. Request proceeds to Step 4


Step 4: Domain Name Review Board affirms or denies request

IT Policy Office does the following:
  1. Requests supporting information from the requesting unit as needed
  2. Consults the Domain Name Review Board
  3. Enters the Review Board's decision in the Domain Name Registry within one month

If Domain Name Review Board approves request, then

  1. Domain is created
  2. E-mail notification #4a is sent to network administrator and unit head
  3. Registration is complete

If Domain Name Review Board denies request, then

  1. E-mail notification #4d is sent to network administrator and unit head
  2. Domain is not created
  3. No further appeal is possible; questions may be sent to it-policies@cornell.edu
