Network Rates
Overview
The Cornell data network is based on a model designed to provide a fair and equitable rate structure. This model ensures that network costs are covered, including anticipated upgrades, and that the costs are distributed in a way that reflects the usage patterns around campus.
The components of the model are
- Port Fee
- Network Campus Allocation Fee
- WAN usage (NUBB)
Port Fee
Each port installed and maintained by CIT incurs a monthly maintenance fee.
Network Campus Allocation Fee
This component captures the costs of maintaining and upgrading the basic network structure at Cornell to ensure that our capabilities meet the requirements of our customers. It includes the costs of providing public ports and wireless (RedRover) service.
WAN Usage - Network Usage-Based Billing (NUBB)
For Faculty/Staff
For faculty and staff the WAN usage fee has two components.
- Every active IP address incurs a flat fee per month. This fee covers sending or receiving between 4 MB and 5 GB of data off-campus (via Internet or Internet 2).
- WAN usage (on wired connections only) above the 5 GB per month threshold is billed at a fraction of a cent per megabyte. Please refer to the FAQ for a more detailed explanation. The billing threshold only applies to traffic that goes out to the wide area network (WAN), which comprises the Internet and Internet 2. Cornell-to-Cornell traffic incurs NO cost. For faculty and staff, Wi-Fi usage is not included in NUBB billing.
You can track your monthly WAN usage and charges (if any) through NUBB, the Network Usage-Based Billing system.
Beginning June 1, 2008, for students the WAN usage fee applies to both wired and Wi-Fi usage but the billing threshold is higher.
- WAN usage (on both wired and Wi-Fi connections) above the 15 GB per month billing threshold is billed at a fraction of a cent per megabyte. Please refer to the FAQ for a more detailed explanation. The billing threshold only applies to traffic that goes out to the wide area network (WAN), which comprises the Internet and Internet 2. Cornell-to-Cornell traffic incurs NO cost.
- If your connection is through ResNet, the ResNet fees apply. For more information, see the ResNet home page.
You can track your monthly WAN usage and charges (if any) through NUBB, the Network Usage-Based Billing system.
Rates
- Port Fee is shown in the rates table
- Network Campus Allocation Fee is recovered at the VP or Dean level through the Campus Allocation Method (CAM)
- Usage Fee for university departments is shown in the rates table (no fee if WAN usage is less than 4 MB in a given month)
- Network rates and fees for student residences are shown on the ResNet home page.
Rate changes take effect at the start of Cornell's fiscal year on July 1.
