EZ-Remote documentation

------------------------------------------------------------------------

A decision has been made to decommission the EZ Remote and Express Lane services at the end of the 2009 subscription cycle.

Express Lane service ended on June 30, 2009

• EZ-Remote service will end on August 31, 2009

EZ-Remote is no longer offering new registration. Cancelation after July 31 will result in no refund. However, the service will continue to work until current year subscriptions end.

EZ Remote is a for-fee subscription based Internet service provided by Cornell. Express Lane was designed as a “simpler/free” version of the EZ-Remote service for people who only needed to dial in for occasional, brief access to campus services.

If you are currently a user of EZ-Remote, you will receive final notice via email from CIT mid-August. Alumni communications are being coordinated through Alumni Affairs. This coordination effort may cause a delay for alumni communications. However, full details are provided below, including further details about why the decision to decommission EZ-Remote/Express Lane was made, alternative Internet service provider options, and user support that will be provided.

The EZ-Remote Project Team will continue to communicate to users throughout this change to ensure adequate support is provided. If you have questions, please contact the CIT HelpDesk via email at helpdesk@cornell.edu or via telephone at 607-255-8990.

When will EZ-Remote service end?

EZ-Remote service will end on August 31, 2009. Prior to that time, you will need to establish Internet service with a non-Cornell Internet service provider if you want continued Internet access.

Why is EZ-Remote being decommissioned?

This decision has been vetted with campus administration, the IT Managers Council (ITMC), and the Faculty Advisory Board on Information Technologies (FABIT).

EZ-Remote was developed to foster academic productivity via Internet access when there were very few other options for Internet service available. The service requires modems to access the Internet. Most computers currently being manufactured do not even have modems in them anymore, as recent technology provides faster, better quality Internet connectivity than modem access provides.

Subscribership has declined to the point where revenue is insufficient to properly maintain the equipment, and provide support. As a result, the cost and resources required to maintain EZ-Remote at Cornell far outweigh the value of continuing the services.

How will I get replacement Internet service?

Many non-Cornell Internet service providers are available. A few options are outlined here to help you get started.

Your Internet connection speed will differ depending on which service you use, because of the type of connection provided by that service. Learn more about different types of connections offered.

Can I cancel my EZ-Remote service now?

Yes, you can cancel at any time. However, cancelation after July 31, 2009 will result in no refund. Full details about cancelation options are available at http://www2.cit.cornell.edu/ezremote/cancel.html.

What support is being provided?

You can continue to use EZ-Remote until it is decommissioned. If you have difficulty using either service between now and then, please contact the CIT HelpDesk via email at helpdesk@cornell.edu or via telephone at 607-255-8990.

You are responsible for selecting and signing up for service with a non-Cornell Internet service provider if you want continued Internet access. Each service has different requirements for your computer, so make sure you discuss computer requirements with the service provider before you sign up.

To help you get started, we have provided a list describing the different types of Internet service connections available, and a list of non-Cornell Internet service providers for you to select from.

Will the EZ-Remote decommission affect my email service?

EZ-Remote provides Internet access only. You may have used EZ-Remote to connect to the Internet and the Cornell network to check your email. However, EZ-Remote is a separate service entirely from your Cornell email address and email service.

As such, your email address and email service will not change due to the decommission of EZ-Remote. When you sign up for Internet service with a non-Cornell Internet service provider, you will be able to continue to access your Cornell email as usual.

Will this affect my ability to connect to online campus resources?

To access restricted resources when you are off-campus, use the library's home page as the starting point (http://www.library.cornell.edu/). Restricted resources will require you to authenticate using your NetID and NetID password, after which as long as the session stays active you should continue to be able to get into the resource. Forgot your NetID password?

The following services may also be useful to help off-campus users access Library resources. All of these services require software installation on your computer.

Will I be provided additional updates?

The EZ-Remote Project Team will continue to communicate to users throughout this change to ensure adequate support is provided. If you have questions, please contact the CIT HelpDesk via email at helpdesk@cornell.edu or via telephone at 607-255-8990.
