Design Guidelines for General-Purpose Classrooms

  • Characteristics - 20-75 Students, >350 Sq. Ft., Length 1.5 x Width, Most common rooms on campus
  • Acoustics - Wall treatments may be necessary on rear and one side wall
  • Lighting - Manual or simple electronic controls
  • Computerized room control system generally not needed
  • Furnishings - Seating depends on usage and telecommunications
    • <50 People - Movable tables/chairs
    • >50 People - Fixed if room is sloped or tiered
  • Instructional Media
    • Laptop Computer
    • Equipment closet in corner of room
    • Screens - Minimum of two and allow visible blackboard space
    • Small standalone podium or portable placed on table
    • Data/Video projector hanging from ceiling preferred or possibly mobile
  • Telecommunications
    • Network port in instructor's area
