What Can I Do?

For Cornell University to meet its goals regarding climate change and sustainable development, everyone needs to join in the effort to reduce energy use and to minimize our environmental footprint. To that end, we present

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Green Things CIT Staffers (and others) Can Do

Turn equipment off

Computers, monitors, printers, copiers, scanners, speakers, etc. If you're going to be away (or just not using it) for as little as 20 minutes, turn it off. To get an idea how much energy and money this can save, see CUFA's Power Conservation page. While you're there, note that a laptop computer uses much less energy than a desktop. Keep that in mind the next time you replace your computer.

Limit use of paper and consumables

Print two-sided whenever possible. Use "draft" mode to use less ink or toner. Print "multiple pages per page" where feasible. Edit and review electronically rather than on hardcopies. Store electronic copies instead of paper copies. Circulate e-copies for meetings. Use paper that is at least 30% post-consumer recycled.

Enable and configure power-saving features on your computer

You'll find a quick How-To guide at CUFA's Power Saving Tips page.

Recycle many, many things

Not just paper! Did you know you can recycle most batteries, toner and inkjet cartridges, cell phones, pagers, CDs and DVDs, work and home computers, and more? CUFA's Sustainable Computing site has details.

Telecommute / Teleconference / Videoconference

Travel less and turn what was travel time into productive time. Win-win.

Turn off the lights and use that space heater wisely

Last one out the door, turn off the lights. Leaving your office for a meeting, turn off the lights. A space heater uses a lot of energy; would a sweater work for you?

Walk Run Bike

Walk to meetings when possible. It’s good for the environment and it’s good for you. Everyone cheers wildly.
