Special Mailboxes

Getting Help

If you have questions (and can't find the answer on these web pages) or comments about using special mailboxes at Cornell, send an e-mail message to special_mailbox@cornell.edu. You should also use this address if you need to:

  • Change ownership of a special mailbox to another eligible person (see Transferring Ownership for details)

  • Reset the password (to the password requested on the original request form)

  • Shut down a special mailbox

When you ask to have a special mailbox closed, you can help by using Who I Am to make all messages addressed to your mailbox "undeliverable."

  1. Clear your personal Kerberos ticket if it is active.
  2. In Bear Access, click on the Directory Services folder, then on Who I Am. (Or go to whoiam.cornell.edu in any browser.)
  3. In Who I Am click on the link for Special Mailboxes.
  4. Where it asks for a NetID, enter the special mailbox Network ID.
Be sure to include the '-mailbox' suffix (example: brrc-mailbox).
  5. Where it asks for a Password, enter the password associated with the special mailbox Network ID (not your personal password).
  6. You'll see the special mailbox welcome page in Who I Am. Click on the link for Electronic Mail. (You may need to sign in using the special mailbox's NetID and password again.)
  7. Under postoffice account, select the second radio button.("I don't want to receive any electronic mail addressed to my_special-mailbox@cornell.edu")
  8. Click the Set it! button at the bottom of the page to save your settings.
