  2. For Secure Sockets when Sending, select Required, STARTTLS. (new as of 10/23/09)

For Kerberos Authentication, select the Off radio button.
For Kerberos 4 (POP only), select the Off radio button.

  1. Click OK.

This sets up TLS for your dominant personality. If you are using multiple personalities to receive mail and you want a personality other than the dominant to use TLS:

  1. From Eudora's Tools menu, select Personalities.
  2. In the Personalities window (usually at the left), right-click on the personality you want to have use TLS.
  3. From the popup menu, choose Properties.
  4. In the Account Settings window that appears, click on the Incoming Mail tab.
    Incoming Mail window

For Authentication style, select the Passwords radio button.
For Secure Sockets when Receiving, select Required, Alternate Port.

  1. Click OK.

It is possible that when you try to use Eudora with TLS, you may receive a warning message from Symantec Anti-Virus about "an encrypted email connection." If this happens, you need to make a simple configuration change in Symantec.

Macintosh

  1. From Eudora's Special menu, select Settings.
  2. Click the SSL icon in the scroll box on the left (you will have to scroll down to see it).
    SSL window

For SSL for POP, select Required (Alternate Port).
For SSL for SMTP, select Optional (TLS). (new as of 10/23/09)
For SSL for IMAP, select Required (Alternate Port).

Make sure Standard Port SSL Negotiation and Alternate Port SSL Negotiation are set to TLS 1.0.

  1. Click the Kerberos icon in the scroll box on the left.
    Kerberos window

Uncheck the boxes next to Use Kerberos and Use Kerberos V/GSSAPI for POP3. (new as of 10/23/09)

  1. Click OK.

Notice that on both these screen shots, the first item refers to Personality and is set to Dominant by default. If you are using multiple personalities to receive mail and you want a personality other than the dominant to use TLS, repeat these steps and use the Personality dropdown list on both screens to select the personality you want to have use TLS.

In order for TLS to work on a Macintosh, you must have an active Keychain.

See our TLS & Keychains page for complete information.
