Installing CorporateSync for Windows CE

The process of configuring a PDA (Personal Digital Assitant) for use with CorporateTime agendas involves several components.  If you are missing any of these components, the device will not work properly, or at all.  The components for using CorporateTime with PDAs are reviewed below:

  1. Connect the PDA to the desktop computer using the instructions and necesary cabling that came with the device.

  2. Install the PDA Desktop or Operating System software on the Desktop PC.

  3. Download and Install the CorporateSync software appropriate for your PDA.

  4. Configure the CorporateSync software on the PDA.

  5. Perform your first syncronization.

So, let's get started (we are actually starting up at step 3 above)....

  1. Close the Corporate Time application on your desktop.  You cannot synchronize Address Book Entries when CorporateTime is open on your PC.

  2. Connect your hand-held PC to your desktop PC.

  3. If you would like to purchase CorporateSync licenses, please contact Charles Jessop, the CIT Software Acquisition Coordinator.  CorporateSync licenses are available through CIT at a discounted rate of $30 per license plus an annual maintenance fee of $4.54.  Once you have purchased your license, you can download a permanent version from the CorporateSync Software Downloads page. Make sure you have SideCar running when you go to this site.

  4. After downloading, begin the setup by double-clicking on the installation program file called CSyncWCE.exe on your desktop.

  5. Once the setup program begins, you will see the screen shown below.

  6. Click on the Continue button to proceed through the setup program. After clicking on the Continue button and seeing some file progress indicators, you will see the following screen. Click on the Next button to proceed through the CorporateSync setup options.

  7. After clicking on Next button, the setup program will ask you what components of CorporateSync that you wish to install. Since you are installing to both your workstation and your CE device, be sure that you have selected Both Local and Remote Files (recommended).  Click on the Next button.

  8. The setup program will now prompt you to specify where you want it to install its program files. Using the default path that is already selected is recommended.   Click on the Next button.

  9. The next screen of the setup program asks whether or not you wish to have the Start Menu icons placed in a special folder. Again, using the default suggestion is recommended.  Click on the Next button.

  10. The next step is to select which type of CE device to which you are installing. If you are unsure of the device based on the description presented here, you can locate that information by clicking on the System applet located in the Settings of your CE device.  In most cases, you will choose the first option as shown below. Click on the Next button.

  11. The setup program is now ready to begin installing the files on both the workstation and the CE device. Click on the Next button to begin copying the application files to your computers.

  12. When you see the following screen, click the Yes button to install CorporateSync to the default location.

  13. Once the installation is completed, you will see the following screen, click the OK button.

  14. When you see the following screen, click the Finish button to end the installation.

    csyncfin.GIF (38907 bytes)

  15. Look at your hand-held PC. Notice the CorporateSync for Windows CE Settings dialog box. Complete the following information:

User name:    enter your Corporate Time user name
    Server: calendar.cornell.edu,campus
If your department is using a server or node other than the default, your departmental Corporatetime support person will supply you with the corrent server and node name to be enter here.

  16. Click the Set Password button to activate your password on your mobile PC. Use the same password as your desktop application to prevent confusion. If you forget your CorporateSync password, you are in big trouble!

  17. Click on the Sync Range tab to set the number of days, weeks or months in the future and past to synchronize your events and tasks. Choose a timeframe that makes sense for your personal work habits.

  18. Click on the Events tab and check the box labeled Synchronize Events. Also check the boxes labeled Sync Refused Events and Show Attendees.

  19. Click on the Tasks tab and check the box labeled Synchronize Tasks. Check the box labeled Keep Completed Tasks and uncheck the box labeled Limit Task Details to 4 Kilobytes (unless you are running low on disk space).

  20. Click on the Contacts tab and check the box labeled Synchronize Contacts with ***** Address Book. Uncheck the box labeled Limit Contact Details to 4 Kilobytes (unless you are running low on disk space).

Synchronizing a WinCE Device with a Desktop PC

In CorporateSync for Windows CE, the synchronization settings are distributed between your hand-held PC and your desktop PC. User information, synchronization ranges, and synchronization rules for events, tasks, and contacts are both set and stored on the H/PC (AKA, hand-held PC). The synchronization activity and the rules for conflict resolution are set and stored on the desktop PC.

  1. Click on Start, Programs, Communication, CorporateSync on your hand-held PC.

Adjusting CorporateSync for Windows CE Settings

  1. Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel (on your hand-held PC).

  2. Double-click on the CorporateSync icon.

  3. Select each tab as necessary to make changes to your CorporateSync Settings.

Un-installing CorporateSync for Windows CE

NOTE: Deleting the CorporateSync for Windows CE application and then reinstalling will cause all agenda entries that are on both your hand-held and desktop to be viewed as separate entries. The next time you synchronize, the entries will be duplicated. To avoid this, reinstall CorporateSync without uninstalling it first. If you simply must uninstall CorporateSync for Windows CE, follow the instructions below:

  1. On your desktop, click on the Windows Start button.

  2. Select Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs.

  3. Select "CS&T CorporateSync Setup Applet". The "CorporateSync Settings" icon will be removed from the control panel the next time that the control panel is started.

Caution

  1. CorporateSync does not support Windows CE 3.0 as delivered on the Jornada 54x at this time. CS&T is looking at support in the next release of CorporateSync, which is expected in Fall 2000.
  2. Some problems have been reporting with syncronizing the contact list. It may report that there is no contact list and the message will read something like:
    Initializing...
    Synchronizing Events...
    Synchronizing Tasks...
    Synchronizing Contacts...
The user name is unknown on this server -- please verify it in CorporateSync for Windows CE.
    Error #19906 in CWceSyncThread.cpp, label 300.
    Synchronization failed.

On the WinCE machine in Start, Settings, Control Panel, Corporate Sync, try entering the actual CorporateTime user ID for the Contact list name and rename the contact list the same on the desktop client
  3. Some users with Windows 98 may experience page fault protection errors when attempting to synchronize for the first time CS&T has reported problems running CorporateSync under Win98 original edition.

The exact error message will be something like: CST_WCE caused an invalid page fault in module CST_WCE.exe at xxxxxx.  If this happens, there are several things to try and in this order:

  4. Details and attendees included with Day Events and Daily Notes created in CorporateTime are transferred into the Notes section on the hand-held (attendees before details). Notes created on the hand-held, added before the attendee list (not in the details section), are deleted upon synchronization.
  5. Pocket Outlook does not support times in start and due dates. If you modify these Tasks on the hand-held and then synchronize, the times will be lost.
  6. If an Entry is deleted on one side and an unmpped field is modified on the other, the Entry will be deleted.
  7. Deleting the application and then reinstalling will cause all Entries that are on both your hand-held and desktop to be viewed as non-corresponding Entries. The next time you synchronize, the Entries will be duplicated. To avoid this, reinstall CorporateSync without uninstalling it first.
  8. Avoid problems by keeping your hand-held connected when installing remote files.
  9. You cannot synchronize the hand-held's repeating Events. You can, however, synchronize CorporateTime's recurring Entries.
  10. You cannot synchronize Address Book Entries when CorporateTime is open on your PC.
  11. You can only synchronize with one Address Book.
  12. If using CorporateTime/OpenTime 3.4, you cannot synchronize your contacts.
  13. CorporateSync currently only fully supports English-language synchronization.
  14. If the CorporateTime Address Book you synchronize with becomes deleted and you recreate one with the same name, the next time you synchronize, all unmodified hand-held contacts will be deleted.
  15. CorporateSync is unable to present a list of possible matches for duplicated names. To avoid this problem, enter as much unique user information as possible (e.g. organization unit, etc.).
  16. Reminders for Entries and Tasks that occur on the same day you synchronize your Windows CE device may not appear. You will be notified of the error, but it will not affect your synchronization.

CorporateSync 1.1.3 for Windows CE resolves a number of limitations created by hand-held reminders. Previous versions of CorporateSync would fail during synchronization when a reminder for an Entry was scheduled to go off that day, since the device would only refresh the reminders database at midnight. With CorporateSync 1.1.3, you will receive a warning regarding the reminder, but synchronization is not interrupted. To resolve the reminder problem, open the Windows CE calendar, double-click the Entry that failed to synchronize and choose OK. This updates the information in the user notification database.

Note: Steltor maintains a folder of Read Mes and Release Notes about the CorporateSync for WinCE.
